Rare Fair Fish
Mackerel Fayre
Sunday, May 17th
Brighton Fishing Museum
This is not some made-up event like the Burning of the Clocks. The fish fayre has been going for centuries.
The proud history of the fair began when an observant fisherman noticed that mackerel had the ability to learn tricks. Like dogs. The first trick they were taught was to prostrate themselves when they heard the words “Let us pray” intoned. This stunt brought them to the attention of the church; wily clergy not being shy when it comes to opportunistic earnings.
The event is now presided over by two Holy Fathers and the Salvation Army Band. The original “Let us pray” genuflecting fish-trick is now considered tacky. The modern incarnation of the event sees the mackerel walking on their hind legs and riding unicycles.
The right worshippy Mayor of Brighton and Hove and his nemesis, Councillor Ann Norman, will be the special guests on Sunday.
If you want to find out about clever animals that can do tricks, look on Wikipedia )or somewhere like that)
