Eve Poland
Eve Poland
Octopussy (screenprint, 2008)
Eve Poland, Brighton based artist and printmaker. Creator of the Kinky Ladies that inhabit many Brighton shops and boutiques.
“I carried the idea for this picture around in my head for years – ever since I discovered Hokusai’s amazing woodcut ‘Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife’ while I was working at the British Museum. The painting I eventually made was reworked as a line drawing, which became a playing-card design for a fancy lingerie retailer. Ultimately I produced this limited-edition screenprint. Weird as it seems to westerners, tentacle erotica has a long tradition in Japanese art, and more recently became popular as a way of getting round harsh censorship laws.”
Up to no Good (screenprint, 2007)
“This print also started life as a painting. It evolved from a doodle and the cats just happened to look very mischievous. I liked the idea of them hanging out on a street corner plotting naughtiness and trying not to look guilty. The title came out of nowhere and was instantly right; I think it’s been integral to the success of the picture – it always seems to make people smile.”

You say: ‘I carried the idea for this picture around in my head for years – ever since I discovered Hokusai’s amazing woodcut ‘Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife’’ ……. presumably that’s because it’s a copy of the ‘Fisherman’s Wife’, just not as beautifully carried out

The Hussy says:
well, granted they both involve women having sex with an octopus. but saying it is a copy is like saying that all portraits of a woman are copies of the Mona Lisa. Yes/No?

Eve! Just one question:-Are you the the same Eve Poland I knew and remember from French degree classes at Middlesex many a year ago…??
I’m pretty sure you were Brighton-based,though could of course be mistaken.
If you can’t remember me,I’m the right ugly bastard who did his third year in Grenoble and (regrettably) spent his final year living in Palmer’s Green. Orrible,it was.
Anyway,I don’t expect to hear from you, given how glamorous and amazingly cool you now seem to be but would think it equally amazing & cool if you DID bother to reply: Your stuff looks awesome and quite in keeping with how I remember you,so all’s well there. -Gissa shout,go on,I know you want to…
