It appears to show evidence of people drawing on each other and bingo. I think they are smashed and they are probably mates. It is dark, so let us assume it is underground. What more do you need to know?

If was to tell you everything I know about this event …. you would be looking at an empty page.

That’s why I reckon it’s going to be good, that’s why it’s going to change your life.

Here is what I don’t know…

“What we do is seriously frowned upon so we have to keep it secret so we don’t get busted and stuff. This is not bingo as you know it – this is Rebel Bingo – it’s about going out with your mates, getting smashed, dancing, playing hardcore rebel bingo, winning sick prizes from iwantoneofthose.com, and drawing on each other a lot.”

So there you have it…

And to accompany it here is the evidence,

Modern Toss lead the way in making and selling rubbishy nik naks for the unconcerned consumer. I have always beleived that if a gift serves a purpose then it isn’t really a gift, it’s a utensil. Do you really want to give utensils out to your friends and relis? No, buy them pointless nik-naks instead. Actually, it would probably be a safer bet to get your nik-naks from Poundland, but if you come from Brightonia you probably attach a pathetic kudos to individuality. So, this one is for you.

This Thursday (the 8th Oct), fans of the downbeat, the romantic and anyone who has recently been dumped should make their way to the Basement (in the same street as the old Argus buildings) for a night of exquisite misery. Well, almost. Mark Eitzelsinger in the American Music Club is playing a show accompanied solelyby piano. He is playing a few old songs, a few new ones and a few covers. He has never toured like this before so it promises to be good. Support is by Franz Nicolay from some little band called the Hold Steady.

The Brighton Comedy Festival kicks off tomorrow, and it sort of appeared without me seeing it coming.

Paramount Comedy pulled out of the festival because they didn’t find it funny anymore. And it seems they took the ad spend with them. Google “Brighton Comedy Festival 2009″ The Hussy is on the first page, for any large event this place is normally the preserve of tickets sellers and promoters standing to earn a butty by telling you how great everything is, oh yes it is, honest, but a ticket. But they aren’t there and I am.

I found a brochure for the festival in the Peter Pan playground, which is where you would normally expect to find a soggy porn stash. So, what does the brochure tell me…

There are 54 comics on the bill

Alan Carr is the most expensive ticket, £30

There are 7 funny women in Brighton this month

There are LOADS of comedy awards, most comics own one

Everyone can quote a 5 star review

If a comic hasn’t been on TV they have been on Radio4

Radio 4 isn’t funny

Gay men are funny

Irish people are funny

Al Murray is second priciest, £25

Beauty is not an asset to comedy

Most of the female comics cost under £12

I am mainly looking forwards to Frisky and Mannish

.

It pleasures me to help promote the Brighton Live Music Festival.

Why? because it is five days of FREE events that work to promote local artists. That means free gigs. WIN-WIN-all around. Brighton Live is a non-profit organisation which makes a pleasant change in a town filled with greedy fuckers.

At the core of the festival is a showcase of new and unsigned Brighton music at a wide range of venues in the city. Over 150+ bands play 20+ venues. There are also free industry workshops and seminars to provide: information, inspiration, advice and discussion on current issues. There are also opportunities for professional development and networking with wise old music professionals and other -not so wise but enthusiastic- unsigned bands.

For five days: 29th Sep to 3rd October there are events in 20+ venues all over Brighton and Hove.

If you only manage to get out to see a couple bands, The Hussy recommends…

Half Sisters: @Madame Geishas, Friday 2nd October 7.30
Catchy songs that will appeal to everybody. Things are kept simple with a poppy sound created using ukulele, flute, jazz drums and vocal harmonies (according to Brighton Visitor)

Grasscut @My Hotel, Friday 2nd October 7.15
A duo possessing all the credentials one would expect to find on the soundtrack to a spooky, dazed and confusing dream, it should come as no surprise that The Sunday Times deemed Grasscut ghostly and weird. More astonishing, though, is the inclusion of “enveloping” in that description; and, more astonishing still, is that it’s completely true. Grasscut’s melodies are never compromised by their spookiness; in fact, the amalgamation of the two produces something so fascinating you’d be a fool to miss it. (according to The Badger)

The Kite Festival takes place at stanmer Park, 11-12 July from 11am to 5 pm.

You really should go see this man. He is the reason Blue took so long to attempt a come-back, and Peter Andre had that potassium fit. He’s trying to put all that behind him now, and is offering himself up for ridicule instead. Makes me love him even more.

Oh Simon. Come live with me, and be my love. I’ll separate your curls each morning. Iron your shirt collars till you could slice a crusty loaf with them. Buff your tongue with vinegar and Jif Lemon, ready for a day of making acerbic comments. I’ll only try and shag you the once. OK, maybe I won’t learn from that, and get you drunk and try it again. But it’ll be love in its purest form Simon, and that’s what counts.

Yours Truly,

Anny Celsi has evoked comparisons to Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega and Jackie DeShannon – all songwriters distinguished by a literary voice that is every bit as vital to the listener as her singing voice. Based in Los Angeles California, her first album, ‘Little Black Dress’, had a rootsy ‘Americana’ feel to it and established her as an artist to keep an eye and an ear on. Now, she brings her music across to the UK for a short tour where we can savour her ‘beatnik cool’.

Sunday 28 June 12 noon – 6pm Phoenix Brighton

The first SUMMER Art Junky, an eclectic and busy bazaar, with artists, makers, collectors, performers & anyone else who has unusual object d’art to sell. Bringing together the best of Brighton’s lively jumble sale culture and its enterprising artist population for a one-day flea market. Located throughout the ground floor of Phoenix Brighton. Offering art works from fledgling and established artists in Brighton and the South East. It also caters for buyers on the look out for affordable art, antiques, unusual castoffs, and “junk stall” inspiration.

HOW IT BEGAN: In 2007 a group of Phoenix artists invited the public to attend a traditional jumble sale – a cosy indoor market in chilly February. The difference was that weird, wonderful and sometimes absurd items were for sale these items had once been the seed of inspiration for works of art by the artists. A regular clear out of the artists studios became a popular event in the creative calendar with the funds from sales being fed back into the Arts Charity, Phoenix Brighton www.phoenixbrighton.org

TO BE INVOLVED:
Artists can set up their own stall for only £20 or if too busy can submit art work for the 50/50 auction.
Visitor entrance fee on the day £1
For more information or to book a stall contact Clare on
clare@phoenixarts.org or call (01273) 603700

Femmes Fatales

Old Market, Hove, 22nd May, 2009

Here’s the sell..

Vavavavoom! will be channelling their years of knowledge and success into a pioneering approach, conquering new territory to present an innovative diverse set of theatre productions with a Burlesque twist. “Femmes Fatales” is the first of these extravaganzas!

So that is not just nipple tassels a-go-go then? Nope, it will explore entertainment history and ponder the role of women in the media. And it will do this with nipples tassels a-go-go. Selina Scott is a woman in the media, what will her role in all of this be? I strongly suspect she was always burlesqued-up under her regualr presenting clothes. So was Anne Diamond. And as for Janet Ellis… we all know where her “woman in the media” role got her.

Partly inspired by great Burlesque revues of the past – Ziegfeld Follies, Busby Berkeley – “Femmes Fatales” also incorporates bizarre elements of Music Hall with other artistic references to create a magical set of ‘Tableaux Vivantes’ of surreal beauty and humour.

These “great Burlesque revues of the past” were a wasted reference on me, so I allowed youtube to educate me, and you too, hopefully…

Organised by the little people behind that best little festival, The Secret Garden Party. They are reknowned for offering line-ups of true taste-making prowess, but also for showcasing those acts in a suitably eccentric and wonderful surrounding, with an atmosphere to match. The party itself is radically expressive and radically inclusive. Get lost in an art-laden labyrinth and be led by fawns down the secret tunnel. Come in costume and try out your Babylon & Eden

This will be The party to close the Fringe Festival. And as it is a holiday on Monday, your secret partying can stay a secret.

Part of the sixth annual World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), join thousands more internationally in this growing environmental protest and celebration of cycling and the human body. Public nudity at the event is also a powerful symbol of cyclists’ vulnerability on the road, and the empowering experience of safety in numbers. And let’s face it, without the safety in numbers, you would be alone and naked, on a bike which would feel shrivelingly unempowering at best.

The be-naked or see-naked theory states that the vast majority of people enjoy either wearing no clothes or watching other people in that state. The theory contends that bliss can only be obtained by finding enjoyment in both simultaneously. Apparantly it is something to do with yin-yan, left-brain-right-brain stuff. Or something. This event will be a perfect chance to see where you are placed on the be-naked or see-naked spectrum. It’s experimental.

Nick Sayers, co-organiser of the Brighton ride, said: “The economic crisis highlights that we can’t rely on the authorities to do the right thing. It’s time for people to demand concrete action to reduce carbon emissions and make sustainable lifestyles accessible to all. The World Naked Bike Ride is a welcome reminder that you don’t need a big carbon footprint to get around, and you don’t need credit to have a good time.” He continued: “A recession is a good point to re-think the direction we’re going, and alter course accordingly. However, the government’s response has been to bail out the motor industry and encourage cheap credit to fuel consumerism and the purchase of more cars. We think our money should be used to create a useful legacy by improving the infrastructure needed for sustainable transport instead.”

The local MPs for Brighton and Hove are attending the event wearing only the hair-shirts that all Honourable Members will be forced to wear to avoid a sleaze induced revolution.

All rather serious sounding stuff, but it’s also a bit of fun with a carnival atmosphere. The ride routes offer participants an incredible “naked sightseeing experience” of Brighton and Hove.

The photographs in the slideshow were all found on Flickr. All were tagged with as “public” and to find out the details of the original photographers, click on the images.

This is not some made-up event like the Burning of the Clocks. The fish fayre has been going for centuries.

The proud history of the fair began when an observant fisherman noticed that mackerel had the ability to learn tricks. Like dogs. The first trick they were taught was to prostrate themselves when they heard the words “Let us pray” intoned. This stunt brought them to the attention of the church; wily clergy not being shy when it comes to opportunistic earnings.

The event is now presided over by two Holy Fathers and the Salvation Army Band. The original “Let us pray” genuflecting fish-trick is now considered tacky. The modern incarnation of the event sees the mackerel walking on their hind legs and riding unicycles.

The right worshippy Mayor of Brighton and Hove and his nemesis, Councillor Ann Norman, will be the special guests on Sunday.

If you want to find out about clever animals that can do tricks, look on Wikipedia )or somewhere like that)

If you want to

Now heading into its third year Loop returns as a two day event, at Victoria Gardens in central Brighton, in 2009. Bigger than ever the music and digital art festival is spread across specially created performance areas in the heart of Brighton.

Freshly added to the line-up is Fever Ray, a genuinely original, freaky-deaky weirdo rockstar. This unpredictable lady of the dance will join the viking invasion at Loop alongside múm (Iceland), The Field (Sweden), Datarock (Norway), Casiokids (Norway) and Emiliana Torinni (Iceland). Apparently it is the long winter nights that makes them all a bit loopy, or in the case of Iceland the issue is exacerbated by seeing your economy shrivel like a scrotal sack dipped in an icy fjord. I imagine the Icelandic performers will be posting their sterling home and living off dried cod. Maybe. Loop festival is not just about macroeconomic issues and bailing out failed banking systems. It is about art and performance.

Something that sets Loop apart from its muddy-field contemporaries is the location. This festival is in a city, not some namby-pamby farm; so after the site closes down in the day, the event will once again morph into LoopLate which has DJs and live performances at various venues across Brighton until the early hours.

Nope, it is nothing to do with thumping dance music and it is nothing to do with Hugh Laurie. It is in fact the latest spin off from the Artists Open Houses you get in the Brighton Festival.

Whereas the Artists Open Houses are generally a way to have a good nose round some creative types houses and pick up the odd piece of original artwork, House is all about bringing the everyday domestic environment into art galleries.

Various bits include a cinema in someones living room, a teenage bedroom in a gallery, some self destructive furniture and a tour of the Phoenix Studios. It takes place at various venues all over Brighton and Hove and runs throughout May.

Get Waisted at Brighton Frocks

Well known for its somewhat colourful and eclectic culture, catalogues of forward thinking boutiques in the North Laines and endless lists of talented, creative designers, the city of Brighton has become established as the epicenter of diverse fashion.

For this very reason, Brighton Frocks annual fashion weekend was born out of a burning desire to celebrate and recognise this city’s extreme sense of style.

Now in its fifth year running, we see our favourite local designers getting ready once more to take part in what can only be described as the South coast fashion fiesta of the year,

Taking place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on the Friday 22nd May, the Theatrical Catwalk Show is the hottest Brighton Frocks main event, and this year promises to be the most lavish show to-date.

And as if that wasn’t enough, to finish the weekend in true stylish form and mark the conclusion of the Fringe festival, Brighton Frocks Fashion Emporium will be opening its doors for keen fashionistas everywhere at the Metropole all day Saturday and Sunday (24th & 25th).

Picture a ‘Fashion Wonderland’ including makeover areas, live models a Red Bull relaxation lounge, The Emporium catwalk show, fashion installations and capping it all off with an after-party that’ll knock your new socks off, and guess what, we’re all invited.

Interested? Yeah you are… ‘So, who’s who?’ I hear you cry…

Saville Row-trained bespoke corset and dress maker Toni Pickles, is the founder and inspiration behind Get Waisted http://www.getwaisted.co.uk/index.php?pageid=65 based in Brighton.Toni builds all her creations from scratch and works closely with her clients who keep her inspired.

Get Waisted will be taking part in Brighton Frocks theatrical catwalk show for the first very time this year and it’s all about femininity and curves.

I am lucky enough to be one of Toni’s selected models for the show so a couple of weeks ago I went along to meet her and have my dress fitting.

After looking at her website, I was half expecting Toni to approach me with a magical wand and some fairy-dust that would transform me from work clothing to ball gown in a matter of seconds – almost.

I was stripped of my office attire, measured with a measuring tape and squeezed into beautiful corsets within an inch of my last breath – crunch those ribs in, push those breasts up, jut those hips out.

All those handmade-layered skirts, all that sumptuous fabric, all those sparkly beads – now, where did I park my horse-drawn carriage?

Frances Duncan

It would seem that the sexy-seaside-city is doing its bit to keep the nude in the forefront of contemporary art. There are at least six venues that are exhibiting erotic art as part of the Brighton Festival.

Frances Duncan, painter of “sensual nudes with a fantasy twist” will be artist in residence at the Thomas Kemp every weekend in May. Which means you will be able to watch her creating new works and talk to her about it. The inspiration of her work is human form and the essence of sensuality, which translates to naked ladies with a dash of come-hither about them. That is the sensual nude part, the fantasy twist is that many of them have wings. Or body armour.

It is kinda like a Middle Earthian readers wives and all very well executed.

Frances tells me that she probably won’t be working using live models in the Thomas Kemp, so no naked birds -feathered or otherwise.

The work can always be seen online www.darkdeliverance.com

Sleeper Festival Of The Summer?

The Great Escape 2009

As The Great Escape 2009 adds Gang of Four, The Charlatans and The Rumble Strips to its already impressive line-up, The Hussy thought it was time to spotlight Brighton’s premier indie funfair as one of the best festivals to be at.

The UK’s own seaside SXSW goes from strength to strength every year. As anyone who’s seen it for themselves knows, Brighton’s TGE remains a living, breathing place to see next year’s best bands before they hit the car-advert-soundtrack and Friday Night with Jonathan Ross way of life. Brighton’s scenic, excitable, laissez-faire attitude provides the perfect backdrop for the non-field, pier-centric festival experience.

Also announced for this year include Kasabian, British Sea Power, Patrick Wolf, Little Boots, The Maccabees, Enter Shikari, Holy F***K, Brakes Noah and the Whale, Just Jack, The Black Lips, iLIKETRAINS, Ben Kweller and Future of the Left, Idlewild, Kissy Sell Out, Esser, Wintersleep and Bombay Bicycle Club.

Those on the bill on the edge of hugeness, by no means only, are Passion Pit, Johnny Foreigner, Titus Andronicus Ipso Facto, Hunting for Minotaur and the brilliant-but-impossibly named Dananananaykroyd.

Last year saw parts-of-the-current-indie-furniture like Crystal Castles, Bon Iver, Ladyhawke, Friendly Fires, Noah and the Whale and Laura Marling go on to mainstream acclaim and murder critics’ 2008’s end-of-year love-ins. Hell, even Vampire Weekend managed to slip by without too much hysteria at the time.

The three-day festival held in venues all over Brighton will also treat fans to debates, talks, secret gigs and all sorts of after-party goodness for those with delegate passes. The festival will this year feature an “Artist Village”, where the conference side of the festival will host a number of educational panels, networking sessions and general schmoozing opportunities for artists and media.

Depending on how jaded you are, Brighton remains either a Little-London-by-the-Sea, corporate sell-out for hosting such a hype-fest, or literally a breath of fresh air from the usual bland, inner-city festivals germinating rapidly with every passing season.

Held in May, The Great Escape raises the curtain for the major festival season and is a formidable contender for one of the most innovative festivals going. Do yourself a favour by grabbing the zeitgeist by the scruff of the neck and getting a ticket pronto!

Tickets for The Great Escape are on sale now, priced £45, £65 or £150 for a delegate pass. Go to www.escapegreat.com for more details.

Heroes Run 2009 @ Hove Lawns

17th May

Organised by local charity Passing It On who raise money to build schools and support education in some of the poorest areas of Africa, Heroes Run is a 5k, 10k or 500m fun run dressed as your favourite Superhero (for the record mine is She-Ra, Princess of Power).

This year’s Heroes Run (formerly the Superhero Challenge) will be held on Sunday May 17th. Even if you aren’t joining in with the running part, I recommend you at least come along to watch and cheer along. Trust me it’s quite a spectacle.

As Heroes Run is part of the Brighton Festival this year they are putting it on month later than the norm. However, they’ll also be tying this in with be attempting to set a new Guinness World record for the most Superheroes in one place.

The record attempt will take place on Hove lawns just before the run sets off, be there or be square – and be sure to bring your cape, pants and tights.

£6 age res 18+

Los Albertos have created quite a following amongst dance floors across Europe and festivals alike.

Describing themselves as a ‘foot-stompin’, brass-blarin’, and rip snortin’ high energy blend of ska, punk, funk, dub and original beats’, six-piece Los Albertos consistently fire out a rare blend of high-octane bouncy music to wiggle your hips to, accompanied with a typically random English sense of humour in their lyrics.

Writers of all their own material, Los Albertos like to sing about things like, drinking beer, trips to the dentist, calling in sick to work, ridiculous governments and nice men from next door – trust me, these lyrics are all guaranteed to have you singing in your shower the next morning and possibly on the bus on the way to work.

Spreading their happy vibes with a mixture of horn-driven ska, drum and bass, and swing, it’ll be a carefree night that’s all about having fun – just make sure you’ve got your dancing shoes on, the music will control your feet!

I love contemporary poetry, so since I heard works from Luke Wright, Poet Laureate in the making, explained as ‘Visceral, poignant and funny verse’ The Scotsman, ‘…from the best young performance poet around’ The Observer, my ears have been itching to hear more.

A poet’s work is never done.

An Edinburgh Fringe Festival favourite, A Poet’s Work is Never Done is Wright’s most popular show to date and offers us light-hearted and contemporary verse.

Wright has also received 4 and 5 star reviews from The Herald, Time Out and The Metro and is the most recent poet-in-residence on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live.

Away from the busy hubbub of Brighton, awe-inspiring Nineteenth century cathedral St Bartholomew’s is the perfect setting for this classical event with its heady mixture of incense and soft lighting.

Requiem, released in 2005 by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, topped the UK classical charts within a month of its release. Featured on the Classical Brits and Classic FM, Jenkins’ moving work has been called “…the ultimate in post-modern Requiems…” by Music Week magazine.

In his unusual work, Jenkins combines Japanese death poems with traditional Latin text encountered in a Requiem Mass.

It’s time to get in touch with your classical side, let Jenkins’ masterpiece wash over you for the evening whilst bathed in the magic of candlelight.

speaker-head-by-Gregor-Timlin

If you already know what Pecha Kucha is then the only info you need is…

Brighton PechaKucha #1, Red Roasters-Kemptown: 7.30pm

For everybody else…

If you ask most creative people to talk about themselves/their-work you will get lots of gesticulating motions and enthusiasm and it may take some time. Creatives don’t do boundaries; that is why they are creative, that can also be why they aren’t always good presenters. The format of Pecha Kucha puts edges onto thought spirals.

The 20:20 format…?

Each presentation comprises 20 slides; each one is viewed for 20 seconds. Total time; six-and-a-bit minutes. Difficult for that to become ethereal arty spirals.

The Presenters…

There is a mix of artists, performers, architects, designers (The above image is by one of the nights presenters). The founder of Pecha Kucha was an architect so the events can be over-represented in that area. But we all need houses, don’t we?

Will it catch on…?

It is already in at least a million countries (see www.pecha-kucha.org for the full list)

Is Brighton big enough to support it…?

Well, this town is nothing if not fond of showing off. Standing in front of a crowd exposing yourself in 20 second bursts, perfect. Matched.

Can I go…?

Yes you can, but it will definitely sell out so be early, or at least punctual.

Having followed Stephen on the circuit for awhile, I’m particularly excited about this new stand-up show. Described as “brilliant” by Harry Enfield and having been the head comedy writer for Radio 1 for the last 10 years, innocent-looking comic Stephen Grant is has a reputation as one of the best comperes on the UK comedy circuit, and it’s easy to see why.

Fast-paced stand up comedian and regular Komedia compere, quick-witted Stephen will be previewing his brand new show with virtually all new material.

Komedia is a great venue with a warm and friendly atmosphere; it’s a bit like visiting old friends. Be prepared for your cheeks to hurt, your belly to ache and your make-up to run down your face. They say laughter is the best medicine and with Stephen at centre stage you are guaranteed to laugh so hard you might even fall off your chair.

Running for nine years and having received rave reviews from The Guardian – “Savagely Funny – Fantastically Silly”, The Treason Show is real sketch comedy and political satire at its absolute finest.

The Treason Show is Komedia’s resident sketch comedy show. Moving as fast as the news, you’ll never get same show twice. This edgy satirical sketch show gives an irreverent look at news and current affairs.

Topical, satirical and musical performed by a team of multi-talented sketch artists, The Treason Show is a must-see Brighton institution.

Apologies in advance for accidentally putting this up after a few dates have gone by, but if you hurry out tonight you’ll be able to catch the wonderful Charlot Webster along with Kate Walsh, Conrad Vingoe, Dannii Nicholls and Ben Griffiths all tucked inside Kemptown’s Fairtrade Gallery tonight (4th April).

The April Alternative kicked off on Thursday 2nd April and continues until the end of the month with some wonderful acts evenly distributed throughout the coming weeks…

Thursday 9th April sees rambunctious country fun from The Crucks, sounding like Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem covering Johnny Cash they ooze a riotous sense of fun, playing with wit and energy. They’re accompanied by the Brighton based collective known as Jukebox Poets, a group who put a great deal of theatricality and performance into their poetry readings, tag-teaming words and rhymes back and forth with great gusto, humour and intelligence.

Friday 10th April has beguiling and experimental folk singer Mary Hampton headlining and support from Astra.

Saturday 11th April sees my favourite singer-songwriter of the 21st Century playing an intimate set in anticipation of his new EP; Ed Harcourt was Mercury nominated in the year 2001 and has continued to produce an incredible catalogue of work over four albums and numerous side-projects. Support comes in the shape of The Robot Heart who produce folk-pop filled with invention and layered melodies.

Thursday 16th April boasts another jam-packed line-up, rich piano-led folk from Sharon Lewis, Barnaby O’Rourke, scrappy funky folk frolics from The Great Indoors and the elegant voice of songstress Crack-a-Jack Crow.

Friday 17th April is a showcase from Fat Cat Records’ sweet country-tinged singer-songwriter Tom Brosseau, the ethereal Pantaleimon and Nik Barrel.

Saturday 18th April finds two rather avant garde acts sharing space; the experimental and intricate sound of Tenebrous Liar and the jazzy swagger of Black Carrot.

Thursday 23rd April has the sweet and funny sound of Foxes!, they share a similar boy-girl sound to The Moldy Peaches but mixed with uplifting Beach Boys riffs; support comes from shimmering acoustic act Charleyville.

Friday 24th April puts The Gin Club at the top of the bill, playing a toe-tapping, head-nodding line in Blues Country, a path also walked by their support act The Shoestrung, expect with a more raggedy sound.

The festival comes to a close on Saturday 25th April with Pepper Records’ Live All Day Recording, which lasts from 2pm to 11pm and is free! As a nice warm-up before the madcap May festival hits town, there is a diverse and brilliant range of music playing in this venue amongst art by Alex Binnie; Jim Sanders; Binnie, Glew, Sanders, Shuttlewood and Pam Glew.

A little about Lillie-

‘Excuse my French but BLOODY HELL! At last she has hit our shores. She is one foxy, sexy, sophisticated French lady! Lillie la France has arrived and will delight you with her “je ne sais quoi” and Gallic charms.

Born among the artists and the riffraff of the “Butte Montmartre”, the red light district of Paris, Lillie Daniele La France, one of the many children of the colourful Madame Janine and a British airman, Lillie is the quintessential “Môme de Paris”.

After an unsuccessful attempt at working in the family owned brothel of Place Blanche, she was spotted by Monsieur Jean, director of the Moulin Rouge Music-hall troupe and as a chorus girl in the “C’est Formidable!” revue show. Her charisma, cheeky sexual performance and her ease at embracing standards by Edith Piaf, Eartha Kitt and Charles Aznavour and making them her very own, led her to the very top of the Parisian cabaret A-list. Now sit back, relax, and listen very carefully, she shall sing this only once… Don’t miss out and book her now. Let her bring your customers the magical charm of Paris!’

The Marlborough Theatre is hosting a short residence by Ms La France on the 27th & 29th March (a nominal £5 charge to cover Eurostar tickets for Madame). Join Lillie for an evening of music, tears and out of control boas, feel her life (and loves) through her music and her shimmering joie de vivre. Book now and do not miss the wonder of Paris by the sea, packaged in the beauty that is Her Royal Highness, Lillie La France. Vive Lillie!! Vive La France!!

Great

Escape Festival 2009 PREVIEW

May 14th – 15th – 16th

Looking at the current line-up for this year’s Great Escape Festival is almost like looking at my own fantasy festival roster (sadly I don’t think Marvin Gaye or Jeff Buckley are available for bookings anymore).

Top of my must see list is Ben Kweller, the curly haired American has slowly and steadily been building up an impressive catalogue of songs beginning with his quirky indie-pop debut record ‘Sha Sha’ with the gorgeous song ‘In Other Words’ and slacker-anthem ‘Wasted & Ready’ being particular standouts, through his alt-country new record ‘Changing Horses’; Kweller has ear-marked himself as a considerable talent.

Elsewhere there’s the almighty Holy Fuck, praised by many including Radiohead, they are an act truly worthy of the hype, creating Earth-shaking instrumental cacophonies that sound like insanely well-produced, remixes but are, in fact, played entirely live. Songs such as ‘Casio Bossa Nova’ and ‘Lovely Allan’ are gloriously exuberant and guaranteed to prompt moshing, dancing and general grinning.

There’s meaty rock in the form of Kasabian and Future of the Left, the latter of which delivered a blistering set at last year’s Swn Festival in Cardiff, which saw me pogoing incessantly to pretty much every song they played. Their debut album ‘Curses’ is a classic of Welsh rawk and the follow-up should be on its way soon.

Some great folk acts can be found in the shape of Woodpigeon, who were a definite highlight when I first heard them at End of the Road in 2008, and are gathering quite a reputation for themselves of late. Meanwhile there’s Liam Finn whose recent album ‘I’ll Be Lightening’ saw the singer-songwriter coming on in leaps and bounds. Also highly recommended is Lightspeed Champion, the baroque new guise of ex-Test Icicles member Devonte Hynes, his debut album ‘Falling Off The Lavender Bridge’ prompted the NME to name Hynes the 20th ‘coolest person in rock’.

There’s also shouty, 80s-teen-movie punk-pop from Fight Like Apes (brilliant at Green Man last summer), experimental electro from The Mae Shi, avant-garde surreal pop brilliance from New Zealand’s Conan Mockasin (check out this live session I recorded with him in the back of a transit van: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3AreTg0jXg ), and I could also harp on about The Veils, Metronomy, Casiokids, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, British Sea Power and Bell X1 but I don’t want to spoil it all for you… there’s so much crammed into this 3 day, 300 band, 34 venue event that part of the fun is discovering some amazing new acts for yourself! I’m already having dilemmas about who to see.

The festival begins on the 14th of May, and all the info you need can be discovered online at: http://www.escapegreat.com

See you there!

(calendar added soon)

We have done our best to list what we think are the best – or most interesting – things that you can waste your time with. If you want to be in our listings diary, please email The Hussy. events@thehussy.co.uk . We attempt to evaluate every lisiting so contact us with enough time to check it/you out before your event.
Please check any details with the venues involved. If you feel you have wasted your time because of our recommendations, sorry and please let us know so we can save others from your mistakes.

24/02/09 - Music + Digital, Latest Music Bar, Brighton

Music + Digital: A Wired Sussex Social

7pm on February 24th at The Latest Music Bar
This is a chance for geeks, digital media entrepreneurs, musicians, indie record labels, music journos and anyone interested in music and the digital world to get together and explore overlaps.
Digital has revolutionised music and the music industry. The opportunities that it has generated for people to share their music, talent spot and promote artists, and for artists to bypass record labels and create new economic models has created a fantastic amount of new thinking and acting which has left many of the record label behemoths rocking with confusion.
Come along to The Latest Music Bar on February 24th, hear Vlad Lodzinski, Chief Creative Officer of LP33 , an LA-based digital music business with the biggest music scout network in the world, on how he’s approaching the reformation of the industry, and share your ideas in our first Music + Digital Social.

Thrown together in the social and sexual upheaval that was Hastings 2007 this shadowy Bohemian Ukulele syndicate originally set out to inflict mind expanding psychediddly four string disharmony on the people of Hastings. It soon became clear that by a serendipitous and baffling combination of personal dysfunctionity, collective harmony, musicality, sexuality and sheer visual peculiarity the Bohemia Ukulele Band had become one of the most dazzling, dynamic and exciting musical acts ever. Raw ukulele rhythms and close-harmony voices! Oi! 7pm. £6.
